The Trumbull Creek
Wetlands Mitigation Bank is the sixth wetlands mitigation bank
completed by Ohio Wetlands Wetlands Foundation. It is located
on State Route 166 along the Ashtabula-Geauga county line. The
site encompasses 460 acres of retired farm land and woods.
The construction of Trumbull Creek will be completed in two
phases. Approximately, 250 acres of wetlands habitat will be
restored when both phases have been completed. The first phase
of construction was completed during the fall of 2002. The
second phase will mostly be restored forested wetlands. The
earthwork the second phase was completed in 2004 and 2005. The
planting of more than 84,000 trees will be completed in the spring
of 2006. The completed project will be monitored for a period
of 10 years.
Ohio Wetlands Foundation will be
donating the entire property to the ODNR, Division of Wildlife in
the near future. At that time, the site will be open to public
access for passive recreational uses such as hiking, bird watching,
hunting and trapping. |
The restored wetlands will provide a substantial
amount of lowland woods as well as shallow emergent, scrub shrub, deep
emergent and floating aquatic beds. An impressive array of wetland
plants already inhabit the area as numerous wetlands existed on site
prior to the start of construction. These existing plant
communities should provide an excellent seed source for the wetlands to
be restored. In addition to the restored wetlands, approximately
4,000 feet of of high quality headwater habitat streams will be
permanently protected. The restored wetlands and protected streams
will provide excellent habitat for salamanders and other amphibians.
